Have you ever wondered what it’d be like to spend your days inside a lighthouse staring out to sea? Check out this fascinating new interview with Spence, a Prince Rupert-based lighthouse keeper, on the podcast, Curiosityness.
Spence describes how he got started wanting to be a “relief keeper”, someone who travels to lighthouses up and down the coast. “You need to be nimble, you need to be ready to move at moment’s notice,” he says. “You can’t just accumulate a whole bunch of junk and then try to transport that with you.”
But then the coast guard told him they wanted him to stay permanently at the Seal Cove Coast Guard Base near Prince Rupert. “I could be here for the next 10 years,” he says.
