A COVID outbreak tied to transportation workers at the LNG Canada worksite in Kitimat is officially over, says Northern Health.
“There have been no new cases reported in association with the outbreak that was first declared December 16, 2020,” the health authority said in a statement this week. “In total, 16 employees tested positive for COVID-19; all have recovered, and cases and close contacts have completed their required self-isolation periods.”
As a result, Northern Health “is pleased to announce that Medical Health Officers have declared an end to the COVID-19 outbreak.”
That’s positive news for LNG Canada, which has to get a COVID reopening plan approved by the B.C. government before it can increase its workers from a baseline of 450 to 1100 by late January–a requirement that some health experts think is far too lax.
An initial outbreak at the worksite that started in November, which resulted in 56 employees testing positive for COVID, was declared over in late December.
