While most of us were slogging through a pandemic winter this year, Alice Brown-Dussault was out on the water studying whales and other marine mammals.
“Through the winter of 2021, I lived in Prince Rupert, B.C., to assist the marine mammal researchers at the North Coast Cetacean Research Initiative,” she explains in a new video of her experience. The placement was made possible due to the Ocean Bridge Direct Action program.
Brown-Dussault “was amazed at how complex this field of work is, requiring aptitudes in navigation, mechanics, and in the laboratory. Behind every outing on the ocean, hours are spent writing grants, participating in zoom meetings, maintaining equipment, training professionally, working with partners, and planning study design.”
She goes on, “So much work and effort go into every single marine mammal sighting, ensuring that there is never a dull moment!”
Brown-Dussault loved her time in the program and she’s encouraging others to apply, which you can do here. In the meantime, check out her video, which includes many whale sightings and spectacular Skeena scenery.
