The North Pacific Cannery National Historic Site may be temporarily closed due to the COVID pandemic, but you can still visit virtually thanks to a new video from Big Coast TV.
“The history of salmon canneries on the west coast is woven into the history of British Columbia and nowhere is that history as rich and diverse as here on the Inverness Passage,” says host Tim Milne.
The video, which takes viewers on “a trip through the rich maritime history of this classic Canadian historical site”, explains that at one point there were about 223 canneries on the North Coast. The North Pacific Cannery was built in 1889, and is the oldest intact cannery.
Lesley Moore, a former general manager of the site, observes that “First Nations fished for thousands of years and when it was discovered by those who had moved here how bountiful the fish was it really became one of the founding industries.”
