While you were stockpiling toilet paper, attempting to make bread and watching literally every TV show on Netflix, a small group of young people in Terrace was learning how to make films.

Over six virtual sessions hosted by the Skeena Diversity Society and run by the Vancouver-based group Reel Youth at the height of the pandemic, the youth learned how to work a camera, use editing software and tell stories visually.

Now you can see the results.

Reel Youth has just made public eight short films created by the young people taking part in the “My World” project.

“The MY WORLD Film Program was a workshop that brought Terrace youth together to produce short video poems – entirely online!” the website explains. “Reel Youth mentors held Zoom sessions where the participants learned how to write slam poetry, and plan, shoot, and edit a short film, some of them for the first time.”

Saša Loggin from the Skeena Diversity Society told the Terrace Standard it was a chance for people to tell new stories about the region: “It’s a chance to look at where we’re coming from, our hopes and dreams for the future.”
