Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need to travel all the way to the Pacific to go surfing. You can do it right here in the Skeena.
The proof is in this stunning video of people riding a freshwater wave–or river surfing as it’s known–in Telkwa. It was beautifully shot by Camus Photography and posted this week to Youtube.
“This amazing video was taken in Telkwa–where rivers meet and friends gather,” the town’s Facebook page explains. “The river offers many recreational activities such as fishing, jet boating, tubing, kayaking, and white water fun. Please be sure to play it safe around the water.”
However, river surfing is definitely different than its ocean equivalent.
“Surfable river waves, especially smaller ones described as ‘holes’, often have very little space in front of them, which demands a shorter board with more upward curve in the nose when compared to a board that would be used in the ocean,” this blog post explains.
